Night

You cover the thieves,
their wanton ways
and
unquenchable thirsts
With thickness,
a sickness
you can swim in

Boogie man lulls
us to sleep
Sandman smothers
Tooth fairy hovers
Spirits creak floors
As kids hide
under covers

Oh Night,
What a fright!
You stand
like a man
on the street
silently stealing
my soft
Heartbeat

And when we turn on
a light
It does you no justice.
Just this:
Shadows slinking
They move while
we’re thinking-
Shrinking
Unblinking

You hold up the moon
with sadness
with gloom
All mingling within
one empty
expansive room

Dusk, your MC
Sundown, your temptress
They reel us in,
Have us wait
up late
For your great
Nothing.

And you’re a liar,
to boot.
Blue fire,
Just when
you told me
You’d hold me,
You shoot

Paint with a palette
of navy
and maybe
clouds won’t convene
so that palette is peppered
silver speckled

You cascade
quite the dark waterfall.
After all
those dreams and
nightmares
and tears
and apathy
and sex
Pour over the world
in one great
heap
while we sleep.

And you smoke
incessantly
Since you smolder
the Sun.
You’re the only one
Who can pull off
That magic trick.

Night,
You’re the man
Who gobbles up
the Land
And you slap
sleeping cheeks
with the back of
your hand

You shelter the hermit
and ignite the
Attention whore
What for?

Night, it’s not right.
Everything seems
More scandalous
under your watch.

You come. You go.
Like clockwork.
No sense of humor.
No sense of surprise,
Yet with wild eyes
You plot our demise.

I eat of your wrath.
I sing of your stillness,
stagnancy
I breathe in your meat,
affixed under my sheet
Heat

Wind is elicit
Storm, explicit
But Night
You are vulgar.
And you smell like
sulfur.

Your bristly
beauty
can compare
with a Siren’s hair.
Your sweet scent
lures me
But your presence
just bores me.
Then I die in
your wake
Only to be reborn
by Daybreak.

Oh Night,
you villain.
Still
Life is more
[insert everything]
Less a bore
With you in it.
